MONDAY, MARCH 9 – 7:00 PM – LECTURE-CONCERT DEVOTED TO TIERKREIS BY KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN
The twelve melodies of Tierkreis (“Zodiac”), one for each sign, were composed by Stockhausen in 1975. The instrument for which they were written is quite unusual: 12 music boxes! As Giuliano d’Angiolini points out in his article devoted to Tierkreis, “The work represents a real turning point in the musical production of the German composer. Its compositional principles, style, and musical atmosphere would reappear throughout his later works.”
Stockhausen describes the piece in these terms:
“Tierkreis is a cycle of musical formulas for the twelve months of the year and the twelve types of human beings, allowing for countless versions. The longest version I have ever produced so far is the composition Sirius for soprano, bass, trumpet, bass clarinet, and electronic music (1975–77), which lasts 96 minutes. May everyone find themselves in their zodiac sign!”
Tierkreis is therefore, to borrow the term used by Umberto Eco, an “open work.”
The concert, performed by Laure Bardet (violin), Yseult Kervyn (cello), Thomas Waelbroeck (piano), as well as Louis Preudhomme and Alexis Bourdon (percussion), will be preceded by a presentation of the work by Jean-Marie Rens, composer and analyst. This introduction will explore the craft of the writing process and show how an element external to music (the zodiac) can generate genuinely musical ideas.
